5 tips on how to build a resume, career at Goizueta
Resume and career building are often some of the most challenging areas for younger professionals. How do you get the right experience? How do you ensure you are headed on the right career path?
There are no exact right answers but during my 15-year career to date and my recent experience at Emory, here are some of the key things that I have learned:
- Show what you do outside of work
Community work is so rewarding, and practicing leadership in the community and within your teams at Emory, although slightly different, can provide great experience for when you become a leader in your career. You will learn how to motivate people and how to place people in areas that complement their strengths through building an effective board. These experiences will be very relevant in the workplace as you move through your career and will provide a great way for you to stand out from the crowd.
- Take the big opportunity
They only come around every so often. Sometimes a big opportunity comes knocking, and it may be out of the blue or something you have been craving for a while. Whenever it happens, you must take it with both hands however challenging or scary the opportunity seems. You continuously learn at Goizueta that accepting challenges that take you out of your comfort zone is the most rewarding experience you can get, and it will help you grow and prosper in your career.
- Build a diverse team
They will carry you forward. There is nothing more rewarding than working in a diverse team. Being at Emory with an incredibly diverse EMBA cohort only re-enforces this point. Building a team from various backgrounds, nationalities and experiences will ensure that opinions get challenged, and opening your mind to other views constantly creates new perspectives to tackle age-old problems. Studies from Goizueta and beyond show that a strong dynamic team is likely to be much more effective than people with the same perspectives and experiences.
- Make it a priority
A little bit, all the time. Every few months I schedule time in my calendar to revisit my resume, reviewing old emails, work and MBA projects to recall specific results achieved. I also ask for opinions from colleagues who I know will be honest with me. Doing this is invaluable as you get other perspectives that you may not be able to see for yourself.
- The power of social media
If you truly want to build a career brand, then social media can be one of the most impactful platforms to use effectively. Creative, impactful and genuine posts about your career, promoting your business, and relaying your EMBA experience can really help you stand out from the crowd as an ambassador for your company and the MBA program. Be proud of the great things your company is doing, and be sure to let the world know, where this is appropriate.
